花櫚という樹齢1000年以上の大径木(マメ科紫檀属)の根元に近いところに出来る瘤（バール）です。
玉杢（たまもく）が非常に美しいです。
汚れや割れ防止のため無臭柿渋を塗った後漆を塗り研ぎします。
のどの薬のかりんの実の花梨（バラ科ボケ属）とは全く別物です。
