celluloid
made in Japan
Released in 1985
Celluloid, which brought a color revolution to fountain pen barrels for almost 30 years from the late 1920s, is the world's first polymer plastic, which is nostalgic and rare, made by treating the fiber (cellulose) extracted from cotton linters with a mixed acid of nitric and sulfuric acids to create nitrate (nitrocellulose), and adding camphor (the main component of camphor tree essential oil) to give it flexibility and elasticity.
In the history of fountain pens, barrels were usually made by making 3-6mm thick sheets and rolling them up, but in the early 1980s, we custom-made 18mm thick boards in Japan, cut them, and created something suitable for carving from square timber. After more than 40 years of drying, it is now in the best condition it could be.
When making the material, green and pearl celluloid are mixed, and jade green, which is finished by separating the colors, has a gorgeous image, while new jade green, which is finished by mixing the colors, has a calm image.
